Twenty years after their graduation, two alumni of the LLU School of Dentistry International Dentist Program recently returned to visit our campus. Vlad Loshkarev, DDS’04 (IDP) and Laura Mego, DDS’03 (IDP) appreciated their Loma Linda experience so much that when their son, Alex, expressed an interest in the dental profession, LLUSD seemed like the perfect place to apply.
Vlad and Laura connected in 2002 while enrolled in the IDP program. When they first met, she was impressed with his zest for life and enthusiasm for everything around him. They hit it off and have been together ever since.
Lifelong connections were made during their time in the program. Laura recalled one of her favorite memories; a shared meal where each student was tasked with bringing a dish from their home country. Vlad talked about the amazing education he received from LLUSD and said he can still hear the faculty reminding him of little tips and tricks when doing a procedure. Denise Layne, the administrative assistant of the IDP department, also invited John Whittaker DDS, a 28-year former IDP professor who taught when Vlad and Laura attended, for the campus visit. All three enjoyed reminiscing about the time they spent together at the School. Throughout their visit, the emphasis was on community, kindness, support, and a sense of belonging within the School and their cohort.
After graduation, they moved to Texas to start a practice but return to Loma Linda whenever possible. The school has become their second home and they are proud that their son is preparing to apply here. When asked what made LLU School of Dentistry his top choice, Alex expressed that his parents often told him about the School’s staff and students and how they made them feel welcome and supported. Vlad and Laura appreciated the opportunity to meet and learn from people of diverse backgrounds.
