For over four decades, Lane Thomsen, DDS, MS, a distinguished dental faculty member, has been a pillar of both his academic institution and the local community. His career exemplifies the power of passion, dedication, and the unexpected twists and turns that life can bring.

Dr. Thomsen’s love for woodworking began with furniture refinishing, specifically vintage ice boxes. Over time, his passion evolved into woodturning, a skill he now shares with others. His dedication to woodworking is evident through his volunteer work at Fortuna Junior Academy, located south of Eureka. Initially, he offered to help the school by volunteering to mow lawns but soon realized the school needed repairs. With a wealth of woodworking tools in storage, he suggested relocating them to an available building at the school. This initiative allowed him to repair items and teach students woodworking skills, focusing on hand tools. The students now create cutting boards for their teachers, a project that has become a cherished tradition.

As word spread about his skills, Dr. Thomsen began assisting others in the community with basic repairs. His contributions extend beyond woodworking; he also runs the community vegetable garden near the school, complete with a greenhouse. Here, he teaches students basic gardening skills, nurturing their love of nature and promoting self-sufficiency.

Dr. Thomsen’s journey into teaching was serendipitous. After graduating from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 1965 and establishing a busy private practice, he joined some alumni on a fishing trip with Dean Charles T. Smith, DDS, in 1968. The fish were not biting, leading to an unexpected conversation about his interest in oral pathology. A few weeks later, he received a letter from Dean Smith inviting him to pursue further education in oral pathology and teach at LLUSD for five years. Despite the challenges of leaving his thriving practice, he accepted the offer and ultimately spent 45 years as a beloved faculty member.

Throughout his career, Dr. Thomsen has taught approximately 160 Continuing Education (CE) courses, including internationally in China and North Korea. His teaching philosophy emphasizes resilience and perseverance, inspired by his own experience as a dental student. He once failed an oral pathology test and quit school for two weeks before returning and overcoming the challenge. He encourages students not to get discouraged and to embrace every learning opportunity.

Renowned for his rigorous yet captivating lectures, Dr. Thomsen is always exploring innovative methods to engage his students. He is committed to breaking the monotony of traditional teaching to ensure his students remain connected and engaged. He advises graduating students to treat patients well and develop meaningful relationships, as these connections can become lifelong friendships.

Dr. Thomsen’s story illustrates that the most unexpected opportunities can often lead to the most fulfilling experiences. His dedication to education, community service, and a love for the outdoors showcases a life richly lived and a career truly deserved.
