The story of Gary Chan, DDS’89, MS’91, MS’95, FADSA, and his family is a confirmation of the resilience, dedication, and transformative power of education at Loma Linda University. Spanning three generations, the Chan family’s narrative is interwoven with themes of faith, service, and a resolute commitment to improving the lives of others.
Dr. Chan’s roots trace back to British Guiana (now Guyana), where his father’s family faced the challenges of a strict British educational system that dictated opportunities based on standardized testing. Orphaned, yet persevering through adversity, Dr. Chan’s father excelled and earned a spot at Union College, paving the way for a legacy of healthcare professionals.
Later, Dr. Chan’s uncles and father were accepted into the College of Medical Evangelists, now known as Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Before the fall semester started, Dr. Chan’s uncle hitchhiked east to find summer work. As he made his way back to Loma Linda, he encountered a toll bridge with a fee that he did not have. Feeling lost and despondant, he felt like his future was slipping away over a toll fee. Fortunately, a toll booth worker noticed his predicament and kindly tossed him the coin he needed. This kind gesture allowed Dr. Chan’s uncle to cross the bridge, returning to Loma Linda in time for registration.
Inspired by that small act of kindness, and other blessings, the Chan family committed to embody the spirit of generosity. They endeavor to help others and spread kindness as far as possible. The toll worker never knew how his simple act affected the Chan family and helped to shape their future.
Continuing the tradition of giving back and joining a health profession, Dr. Chan and his sister pursued careers in dental health, with Dr. Gary Chan becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon/dental anesthesiologist and his sister a dental hygienist.
Valerie, Dr. Chan’s wife, was instrumental in educating their four sons, who became part of the third generation of healthcare professionals. She homeschooled them, ensuring they received a comprehensive, Christ-centered education. Their approach to parenthood, infused with love and divine grace, fostered not only academic success but also strong convictions in their children. The couple reflects with humility regarding the accomplishments and characters of their children, attributing their success solely to God’s grace and guidance.
When thinking about his journey, Dr. Chan fondly remembers the individuals who shaped his education. He appreciates the commitment to service and holistic approach to healthcare at LLUSD, which has enriched his professional life and spiritual journey. Inspired by their experiences, two of Dr. Chan’s sons followed in their father’s footsteps at LLUSD, while another pursued a medical degree (also at LLU), and the fourth felt called to ministry.
For the Chan family, Loma Linda University has provided unparalleled opportunities and instilled a commitment to the motto, “To make man whole.” Dr. Chan understands the importance of always striving to be worthy of his patients’ trust and recognizes that nurturing their spiritual health is as vital as addressing their physical health.
As Dr. Chan looks back on his career, he is humbled to be a part of the Loma Linda University family—who invested in him and gave him his profession and the opportunity to serve his community. He believes that serving and ministering to others brings blessings to everyone involved. He loves the quote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
The Chan family’s legacy at Loma Linda University exemplifies the impact of faith, education, and community service. Their story is an inspiration to others who are also in the pursuit of health and well-being. Dr. Chan finished the interview with his favorite quote: “Be the evidence of a loving God in a world yearning for compassion and care.”
