Meet Shelley Hayton, MAT, RDH, chair and associate professor of the Dental Hygiene Department. From her early days helping out in her father's dental clinic to her long-standing career at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD), Shelley shares what first sparked her passion for patient care. We also explored how she finds balance beyond Prince Hall, recharging through nature and cherished moments with her family.

What first sparked your passion for dental hygiene?

Was there a specific moment that helped you know that this was your calling? For me, it all began in my father's dental office, when I started helping out with various tasks at just eight years old. I watched dental hygienists interact with patients and build meaningful relationships in that environment. Their ability to connect with people and make a difference really resonated with me, and I could easily envision myself in that role. It was an easy decision, and I started the program at LLUSD when I was nineteen.

What’s the best piece of advice you received when you were a student?

The most impactful lesson came from watching the impactful video “If Saliva Were Red.” While I gained invaluable clinical and professional skills from my instructors, this video profoundly shaped my perspective on infection control. It emphasized the importance of protocols, making the pandemic guidelines feel like second nature when they were implemented. To this day, I never touch a surface with my gloves unless it’s protected or sterilizable; I still imagine a red mark being left behind! It may sound amusing, but that visualization truly resonates with me. I suppose you could say I’m a very visual learner!

What is your favorite tradition within the Dental Hygiene department?

My favorite tradition is definitely the Pinning Ceremony. It's a deeply personal event dedicated to the students, their families, and friends. We take time to celebrate their accomplishments and recognize the remarkable professionals they have become. The ceremony takes place at the lovely Campus Hill Church. Seeing everyone dressed in black, complemented by the red roses they receive, creates an almost ethereal atmosphere. It's truly a beautiful and meaningful service!

In your free time, how do you like to “recharge”?

When I'm not at the School, I love to spend quality time with my kids and grandkids, especially activities like camping and boating. Catalina is our family’s favorite getaway, and there's nothing quite like being there soaking up the sun and creating lasting memories together.

Shelley’s story reminds us that dental hygiene is about far more than technical skill; it is about the relationships built and the meticulous care provided to every patient. Her unique perspective, shaped by decades of experience and a visual approach to safety, continues to be an asset to our School. We are grateful for her dedication and the vibrant energy she brings to the School every day.
