Loma Linda University School of Dentistry is excited to announce a groundbreaking pilot program that integrates the surgical placement of dental implants by undergraduate students. This initiative, spearheaded by Jaime Lozada, DDS, aims to provide hands-on experience and advanced training to our students, preparing them for the complexities of modern implant dentistry.

Starting as D3s (third-year students), participants will observe the surgical placement of implants, gaining valuable insights into the procedure and patient care. As D4s (fourth-year students), they will transition to actively placing implants themselves, under the close supervision of experienced faculty. This progression ensures that students build confidence and competence in a monitored, supportive environment.

One of the unique aspects of this program is the incorporation of 3D printing technology. Students will be involved in designing and printing surgical guides for implant placement, enhancing their understanding of digital dentistry and precision in surgical procedures.

Dr. Lozada, a renowned expert in implant dentistry, emphasizes the importance of this program in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. "Our goal is to equip students with the skills and experience necessary to excel in their future careers," he says. "By integrating implant placement into the undergraduate curriculum, we are setting a new standard for dental education."

This pilot program represents a significant step forward in dental training, offering students unparalleled opportunities to develop their surgical skills and embrace innovative technologies. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this initiative will have on our students and the broader dental community.
