The Excellence in STEM Experiential Education (EXSEED) High School Summer Conference has completed its second successful year, offering high school students' valuable insights and hands-on experiences in healthcare careers. Designed for students from local Adventist schools, the program not only supports career exploration but also introduces participants to the unique educational environment of Loma Linda University (LLU).

Hosted by the Office of the Provost, the week-long program immerses students in LLU’s campus life. This year, EXSEED featured two specialized tracks, AI in Healthcare and Dentistry. Looking ahead, the team plans to expand the program to include tracks in Genomics (Genetic Studies), Neurology, and Allied Health. Some of these new tracks may involve preparatory classes to help students make the most of their experience.

In the dentistry track, six students participated in a full schedule beginning at 9:00 AM each day. Activities included tours of the School and clinics, hands-on experiments, and skill-building sessions such as suturing and tooth sculpting. Students also had the opportunity to work with the latest dental technology and shadowed dental care providers, gaining real-world exposure to various specialties within the field. High School participants ranged in age from freshmen to seniors, demonstrating EXSEED's appeal to students considering a future in healthcare.

When asked about the program’s impact, EXSEED program manager Melisa Agree, MA, shared a memorable story:  “It was incredibly inspiring to witness a young female student from England discover her true calling. The conference proved transformative for this student who was initially hesitant to attend. Her experience opened her eyes to how technology can be integrated with healthcare, and she has since decided to pursue medicine, a path we believe was affirmed by her time at the conference.”

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. As the program continues to grow, more tracks will be added to meet students' interests. Families interested in this enriching opportunity can mark their calendars: the next EXSEED program is scheduled for June 22-26, 2026. Registration opens January 1, 2026, and closes April 30, 2026. The EXSEED program serves as an inspiring stepping stone for future healthcare professionals, offering essential exposure to the world of STEM and guiding students as they explore potential career paths. LLUSD is proud to participate, providing young minds with a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a dental care provider.
