An article by LLUSD associate professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Alan Herford, DDS, MD—“rhBMP-2 as an Option for Reconstructing Mandibular Continuity Defects”—was published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 76: 2679-2684. An editorial earlier in the same number of the journal by Leon A. Assael, DMD, called Dr. Herford’s article a “well-considered appraisal of rhBMP-2.”
It was the 18th time, since 2002, that Dr. Herford has been published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
According to the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Newsletter (October/November 2009), at its 91st annual gathering, jointly with the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (Toronto, October 12-17), Dr. Herford accepted the Oral and Maxillofacial Synthes Award on behalf of Loma Linda University. Established in 2005, the $15,000 annual cash prize is awarded to a CODA Accredited Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) teaching center that has demonstrated excellence in the care of trauma patients and in the reconstruction of patients with significant facial defects.
