LLUSD student researchers win big at CDA

Nine LLUSD dental and three dental hygiene student research teams entered their projects in the California Dental Association research competition at the Anaheim Convention Center May 13-16 and won nine of the sixteen available awards.

The Loma Linda students’ awards—three first, three second and one third (and two honorable mentions)—were worth $6,100 of the total $9,200 awarded in scholarships and cash.

Academic Excellence Gold and Silver winners

The following list of fourth-year dental students achieved Academic Excellence Awards for their scores on the National Board Part II examination. The award is based on a score that is one standard deviation above the national mean. The Gold Award is reserved for those who exceeded the national mean on both National Board Part I and Part II.

LLUSD researchers well represented at IADR/AADR 2010

Seventeen research posters from a cross section of LLUSD students, faculty, and staff were featured at the most recent joint annual proceedings of the International Association for Dental Research and the American Association for Dental Research held in Washington, DC, March 3-6, 2010.

Listed below are the LLUSD research posters that were displayed at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, as well as pictures of some of the LLUSD research cohort that attended the convention.

Student Research Presentations 2010 winners

LLUSD dental students from the class of 2011, and dental hygiene students from the class of 2010, made their Student Research Presentations as computerized slide shows at Loma Linda University’s Centennial Complex on March 18.

Clinic With A Heart No. 20

It’s 38 degrees at 12:30 a.m. when Michael, Tashie, and Irene drive from Grand Terrace to Loma Linda. They become the first in line at LLUSD’s Clinic With a Heart on January 24, 2009. For warmth, they rotate in and out of the car, under the watchful eyes of the overnight crew supervised by Kevin Staff, who has set up the clinic’s outdoor security system.

Bonnie J. Retamozo DDS, MSD

The Department of Endodontics is proud to introduce its newest team member to the School.

 

Dr. Retamozo graduated from the School of Dentistry in 2005 and joined the faculty of the Department of Oral Diagnosis, Radiology, and Pathology. After teaching for two years, she decided to pursue endodontics as her specialty of choice, and was accepted into the School’s Advanced Education Program in Endodontics.

Alan Herford, SD, published and accepted LLU award

An article by LLUSD associate professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Alan Herford, DDS, MD—“rhBMP-2 as an Option for Reconstructing Mandibular Continuity Defects”—was published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 76: 2679-2684. An editorial earlier in the same number of the journal by Leon A. Assael, DMD, called Dr. Herford’s article a “well-considered appraisal of rhBMP-2.”

 

Farewell Dr. Theodorou

A farewell reception in honor of Anthony Theodorou, SD’64, assistant professor, Department of Restorative Dentistry, was held on Thursday, January 14, from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. in Prince Hall’s first-floor lounge.
